Sign up for classes! Health habits can be hard to change and tough to maintain. But often the hardest part is getting started! MVP health education programs and support services can help you get started and keep you on the road to taking charge of your health.

    The "Eat Smart" Series

    Choices for a Healthier You

    Save the dates for this exciting new educational series that includes both hands-on cooking and cooking demonstrations classes to be held at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua this fall. Located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region, the Center has a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen and demonstration theater. MVP Health Care Community Health Educators will present pertinent nutrition information while NYWCC chef instructors will lead the class through cooking demonstrations or hands-on cooking preparations. In addition to expert instruction, educational materials and recipes, you’ll sample the foods prepared. You may sign up for one or more classes. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited. MVP members may be able to use their HealthDollars for reimbursement of these class fees, if applicable to your health plan.
    Checks are payable to MVP Health Care and due at the time of registration in order to hold a seat.

    AARP Driver Safety Program

    AARP has developed a six-hour classroom refresher to help drivers age 50+ to improve their skills and prevent accidents. The class covers physical changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time as we age, and provides useful driving safety tips for handling these changes. Fee for the course is $12 (check, cash or money order) for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. Contact your insurance agent to see if you are eligible for an insurance discount. MVP Health Care members may be eligible to use HealthDollars toward this program. Presented by an AARP instructor.

    Safe Driver NY

    Reduce your New York Auto insurance premiums by approximately 10% and take up to 4 Points off your NY driving record after completion of this Safe Driver NY program. Peg Barto, owner of Safe Driver NY, has been teaching defensive driving courses for over 22 years. She will review accident prevention, review of traffic laws and regulations and discuss how to handle unusual situations such as aggressive drivers or road rage. MVP Health Care members will pay $22.00 with proof of membership. All others will be charged $32.00 for the program. Checks are payable to Safe Driver NY the day of the program. Due to strict DMV regulations, no one will be admitted after the advertised start time. Please be prompt or you will be asked to reschedule your session. Allow yourself extra time if travelling a significant distance.

    Physical Activity

     

    OsteoMoves Four Part Series

    If you have osteoporosis and your fear of a fracture keeps you from exercising, have joint pain from osteoarthritis that makes it difficult to exercise, think most exercise programs are too strenuous for you, or want to exercise but lack the knowledge or equipment, then the OsteoMoves series designed for people with osteoporosis and/or osteoarthritis is for you! This self-management program is designed as a combination of information and exercises using a flexible ball that you can use independently at home. The exercises are gentle (many can be done from a seated position) but you are advised to consult with your health care provider prior to beginning any exercise program. Members should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers with non-slip soles. The program will be taught by an MVP Health Care Community Health Educator who is also a certified fitness instructor.

    Social Dancing

    Try these fun, easy-to learn dances to your favorite music! No experience or partner needed; smooth-soled shoes helpful. The dances covered in this class will be Country Waltz & Foxtrot, Social Salsa, Two-Step and Swing Dancing. Taught by dance instructor Esther Brill, who has introduced thousands of new dancers to the joy of social dancing.

    Line Dancing

    Contra Dancing

    Contra dancing began in the late 17th century as French country dances, and later became popular in New England. It has been called an American folk dance, and includes such favorites as the "Virginia Reel." The dances are done in facing lines, and no partner is needed.     Zumba Gold

    “Ditch the workout, join the party!” Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness class. The class format combines a combination of fast and slow rhythms to get your heart pumping and tone and sculpts the body along with dynamic core exercises. Dancers and non-dancers alike will enjoy Zumba Gold for its fun, easy, friendly, anyone can do it moves. This workout is great for the beginner exerciser. Come join the party.

    SilverSneakers® — Muscular Strength & Range of Movement

    Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills.     Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. A chair is offered for support, head to toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.

    SilverSneakers® YogaStretch

    YogaStretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement.  Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

    Tai Chi

    Tai Chi is sometimes described as "meditation in motion," connecting the mind and body. Originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, Tai Chi evolved into a graceful form of exercise, increasing the connection between mind and body. Benefits of Tai Chi can include improving balance, flexibility and muscle strength, increasing energy, lowering blood pressure, and much more. This class will involve an introduction to Yang Style Short Form Tai Chi.

    Qi Gong

    Qi Gong is a series of gentle exercises to promote qi (energy) flow in the body. Qi Gong can improve posture, balance and flexibility as well as functions of the respiratory and digestive systems. Emotional benefits include calming the mind and stress relief.
