Frequently Asked Questions
How to access MVP’s national provider network.
MVP has a national network of doctors and other health care providers that is made possible through an alliance with Cigna.
If your MVP ID card has Cigna’s logo on the front, then you can likely access Cigna’s exclusive network of nearly 670,000 health care professionals and 5,600 hospitals and health care facilities.
Please note: Cigna network access is dependent on plan type. Some Commercial plans only allow members to access the Cigna network for urgent and emergency care, while traveling outside of the service area.
Not sure if your health plan includes national network coverage?
Check your health plan documents or call MVP at the phone number shown in the Member section on the back of your health plan ID card.

When to choose emergency vs. urgent care.
If you believe you have an emergency medical condition, seek help immediately at the nearest hospital or health care facility. You do not need your Primary Care Physician or MVP Health Care to approve emergency care.
MVP Health Care members are covered for medically-necessary emergency care anywhere in the world—24 hours a day.
If you need medical attention immediately for an unforeseen illness or injury, but your health is not in serious danger, go to the nearest Urgent Care Center.
When to Go to the Emergency Room
Ask yourself “Is there an immediate danger to my life?” or “If I don’t get help right away, will it permanently affect my health?” If your answer is “yes” to either question, you have an emergency.
When to Seek Urgent Care
Urgent care is a smart choice when you need medical attention right away, but your health is not in serious danger. Examples may include severe sore throat, sprains and strains, ear or eye infection, fever or flu.
Whenever possible, call your doctor before going to the emergency room. They should be able to advise you. Typically, an answering service for your doctor’s office will take your call after regular hours and have someone call you back. However, go directly to the nearest emergency facility or call 911 if you are in a situation where you can’t call your doctor first, or you feel it is a life-threatening emergency.
Note: Emergency/urgent care services obtained at an Emergency Room or Urgent Care Center do not require approval by your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or MVP Health Care, but you are encouraged to notify your PCP after treatment to arrange for follow-up care.
