MVP Health Care’s Denise Gonick to step down as CEO

Schenectady, N.Y., June 6, 2019 — MVP Health Care today announced that its CEO, Denise Gonick, will leave the company at the end of the summer.

“It’s been an honor to work with MVP for 24 years and to lead the organization as CEO for the past seven. MVP is now in a position of great strength and I take pride in knowing that I have accomplished everything I set out to do during my tenure, most importantly building a strong, competitive market position for the company. Health care today exists in a rapidly changing environment and this is a good time to make a change in leadership to take MVP into the future,” said Gonick.

Gonick’s signature accomplishments as CEO include leading MVP through the difficult political environment surrounding the adoption and subsequent scaling back of the Affordable Care Act. She also spearheaded the acquisition of Hudson Health Plan in 2013, securing MVP’s position as a market leader in upstate New York. Under Gonick’s leadership, MVP’s robust expansion was recently noted as it is now ranked as the second largest company based in the Capital Region according to the Albany Business Review.

Her accomplishments have been recognized throughout the region, but also statewide and nationally. She was recently named to the national “Influencers: People We’re Watching in 2019” list by The Business Journals and was included as one of the 50 most powerful people in health care in New York State by City and State Magazine. Locally, in recent months, Gonick was named to the Inaugural Class of the Albany Business Review’s 40 Under 40 Hall of Fame and received the Women’s Fund of the Capital Region’s Trailblazer Award. She serves as the co-chair of the Business Council of New York State as well as chair of New York Health Plan Association; she will continue those roles through the end of 2019.

Gonick began her tenure with MVP in 1995 as associate counsel and soon was named vice president of legal affairs and general counsel. She then served as executive vice president and chief legal officer until she was appointed president of operations in 2012 and then president and CEO later that year.

“I am excited to explore new ways to contribute,” said Gonick. “I will continue my work on corporate boards, which I enjoy greatly, and mentor the next generation of leaders. After 24 years at one large company, I also look forward to engaging in more entrepreneurial pursuits, expanding my family’s existing efforts to support social mission ventures, and back a variety of philanthropic and business-related causes that align with these objectives.”
