Medicaid

Medicaid is free or low-cost health insurance for individuals in New York State. This plan works well for people and families looking for affordable care.

  • Medicaid covers doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, lab tests, behavioral health services, and more. All for little to no cost.

    If you qualify for Medicaid, you may also be eligible for the Health and Recovery Plan (HARP). HARP is sometimes called HARP Medicaid. It offers extra support for behavioral health or substance use recovery.

  • Most people pay little or nothing for care. There are no monthly premiums for most members. Some may have small co-pays for certain services, like prescriptions.

  • Medicaid looks at your household income, family size, and New York State residency. Some residents also qualify because of age, pregnancy, or a disability.

    If you qualify, your children and other family members may also be eligible for coverage through Medicaid.

Essential Plan

The Essential Plan is a low-cost health insurance option for adults in New York State. It works best for those who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but still need affordable health coverage.

  • This plan covers doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital care, dental and vision coverage, preventive care, and more.

  • Most visits, like check-ups, preventive care, and generic prescriptions, are $0. Some services may have small co-pays. The Essential Plan has no deductible and low or no monthly premiums.

  • You may qualify for the Essential Plan if you live in New York State, are 19 to 64 years old, and your household income fits the limits.

    New Yorkers who are U.S. Citizens or lawfully present immigrants may qualify for the Essential Plan.

    You can’t have other health insurance through a job or Medicaid.

Qualified Health Plans

Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) provide comprehensive health coverage for individuals and families who need coverage and my not qualify for lower-cost programs. Plans are available at different coverage levels, and financial assistance may be available for those who qualify.

  • QHPs cover essential health services, including doctor visits, prevent care, hospital stays, emergency care, prescription drugs, maternity care, mental health services, and pediatric dental and vision benefits. Some plans may also offer additional benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs.

  • Plan costs vary based on the coverage you choose. Many individuals are families qualify for financial assistance, and all plans include $0 preventive care, including annual wellness visits and recommended preventive services.

  • You may be eligible if you need health coverage and do not qualify for Medicaid. Child Health Plus, or the Essential Plan. Exploring your options is the easiest way to see what plans and savings may be available to you.

Children's Medicaid

Children's Medicaid offers free or low-cost health coverage for families who qualify. It provides full coverage for doctor visits, medicine, and other important care. It’s a simple way to make sure your child is fully covered within your budget.

  • Children's Medicaid gives kids free health care. It covers doctor visits, checkups, shots, medicine, dental and eye care, and hospital stays. It also helps with behavioral health needs.

  • There are no monthly costs for Medicaid for children. Most care is $0. Some families may pay a small fee for certain medicines or visits.

  • If you are eligible for Medicaid, your child usually is too. Children must be under 19 and live in New York. Families with lower incomes often qualify for Medicaid for children. Families with higher incomes may qualify for Child Health Plus instead.

Child Health Plus

Child Health Plus (CHPlus) helps families pay for their child’s care. It’s for parents or guardians who do not qualify for Children's Medicaid but still need low-cost coverage. It’s also a good choice if adding a child to your employer plan costs too much.

  • Child Health Plus provides complete health care for kids under 19. It covers doctor visits, checkups, vaccines, prescriptions, dental and vision care, emergency visits, and more.

  • Many families pay $0 each month. Others pay a small amount based on their income. there are no co-pays when your child gets care.

  • Kids who live in New York State can get Child Health Plus. This includes children whose parents or guardians don’t have insurance or are not U.S. citizens. Whether your child qualifies depends on your family’s income and how many people live in your home.

Child Health Plus

If you don't qualify for Child Health Plus, we offer Child-Only plans for children up to age 21 who live in New York State. These are available as Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) through the ACA Marketplace or directly from MVP. Premiums are based on region and coverage tiers include Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Unlike Child Health Plus, Child-Only plans do not have immigration or income restrictions, however enrollment is limited to the special enrollment period (SEP) or if a qualifying life event occurs.
