The holidays are all about joy, connection, celebration, and reflection. But if you're not feeling particularly cheery, you're not alone. The holiday season can be stressful and challenging for both mental and physical well-being. Nearly half of Americans admit they're less healthy during this time, and 43% delay healthier eating habits until the new year. By understanding how the holidays impact your health, you can approach the season with mindfulness and balance.

Here are four tips to help you maintain your health and well-being this holiday season.

  1. Mindful Eating

Food is often at the heart of holiday celebrations, and it's perfectly okay to indulge in your favorite dishes. To enjoy your treats and meals without any guilt, try practicing mindful eating. This means listening to your body's hunger cues and eating just the right amount to prevent overindulgence. Start with smaller portions—you can always go back for seconds if you want. Instead of avoiding certain foods, focus on creating a balanced plate with a mix of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and, of course, that dessert you've been looking forward to all year. By paying attention to your body's needs, you can savor holiday treats while keeping your health in check.

  2. Sip Smartly: Keeping Alcohol in Check

Festive drinks are often a part of holiday gatherings, but consuming alcohol in moderation is necessary to protect your mood, sleep, and overall health. Stay hydrated and pace yourself by alternating alcoholic beverages with water or sparkling seltzer. Consider choosing non-alcoholic alternatives like mocktails and setting a personal limit beforehand. By doing this, you can truly enjoy yourself during holiday celebrations.

  3. Prioritize Self-Care

The holidays are a time to cherish loved ones and reflect on the joys of the season. Be present during conversations and activities. But remember, it is okay to take time for yourself. Focus on your mental health and well-being, even during all the family fun. Do something that makes you happy every day. This could be a quick 10-minute walk, meditation, or having a cup of tea or coffee in the morning.

  4. Staying Healthy

Between travel, large gatherings, and the cold weather, keeping your immune system healthy can be difficult. In fact, there was an uptick in respiratory illness between Christmas and New Year's last year. Luckily, there are simple yet effective ways to stay healthy. Make sure to wash your hands regularly (the CDC recommends 20 seconds with warm soap and water), stay up-to-date on your vaccinations (it’s not too late to get your flu shot), and get enough sleep (the average adult should get 7-9 hours).

Incorporate these tips into your routine to stay healthy and happy this holiday season. At MVP Health Care, we care deeply about your well-being—not just during the holidays but year-round. By embracing mindfulness, balance, and self-care, you can enjoy this special time of year without sacrificing your health.
