Prescription Reminder: Enhancing Convenience for Patients
Most chronic medications included in MVP Medicare formularies are eligible for prescription as an extended day supply of either 90 or 100 days. Once the patient has been stabilized on the prescribed medication, it is advisable to discuss whether they would prefer to receive their medication as an extended day supply through their chosen retail pharmacy or via the CVS Caremark Mail Order pharmacy.
Prescribing chronic medications as an extended day supply offers several advantages: it saves patients time and reduces trips to the pharmacy, makes it more convenient by allowing prescriptions to be delivered directly to their homes—thus lessening transportation challenges—and may also lower copay costs when using a mail order pharmacy for the same quantity of medication.
If your patient has a current authorization, a new prescription for an extended day supply of the medication will not require a new authorization unless there is a change in the dose or frequency of the medication.
As a reminder, you do not need to wait for their current prescription to run out of refills before submitting a new extended day supply prescription.
