Stigma means treating someone unfairly. When people feel judged for addiction or needing help, they might not get the care they need. Stigma makes it harder to get help and can make people feel alone. Addiction is a health problem, not anyone’s fault.

Building Awareness Around Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is about making drug use safer. Things you can do to reduce your risk and harm include:

  • Test your drugs

    Visit forms.ny.gov/s3/Harm-Reduction-Order-Form to order test strips before using.

  • Do not use drugs alone

    If you have to, call the Never Use Alone Hotline at 1-800-484-3731 so someone can help if needed.

  • Get support

    Text JOIN to 55753 (Partnership to End Addiction’s Help and Hope Text program) to receive helpful to receive helpful messages or connect with someone who cares.

  • Carry naloxone

    Visit forms.ny.gov/s3/Harm-Reduction-Order-Form to order this medicine for free—it can save a life by reversing an overdose.

  • Find meetings

    Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and narcotics anonymous (NA) meetings can give support and help you stay on track.
